How to increase the service life of CNC inserts correctly?

In CNC machining, CNC cutting tool life refers to the time from the beginning of machining to the end of tool tip cutting workpiece or the actual length of the workpiece surface in the cutting process. Tool tip processing time is the main assessment index to calculate tool life.

Generally, the service life of each cutting edge is 15-20 minutes. Tool life is measured by each company in a relatively ideal state in the laboratory. According to different workpiece materials, different cutting depth and feed rate, the calculation is carried out according to the continuous processing of each insert for 15-20 minutes, and the corresponding relationship between linear speed and feed is calculated, which constitutes the corresponding cutting parameter table, so the cutting parameter table of each company is also different.

Some friends will question that this data is not accurate, their inserts have not been replaced after a week.

I’ll explain it here. As a CNC tool factory, our tool experimental data are based on high efficiency. Therefore, the 15-20 minutes we get are data close to the limit value based on the maximum test of linear speed and feed rate.

The influence of feed rate on tool life is described in another paper, What are the factors that affect the service life of CNC tools.

The real CNC machining must be different from the data obtained in the laboratory. Blindly pursuing the service life of cutting tools is actually a misunderstanding. Since the tool life is only 15-20 minutes, the effective length of the workpiece cut by the tool determines the number of pieces actually processed. To increase the number of workpieces, it means to reduce the processing time and cutting length of a single workpiece. The processing time of workpiece can be reduced by adjusting cutting parameters of cutting tools

  • Within a reasonable range of linear speed, increasing the linear speed appropriately can not reduce the processing length of the workpiece, but can shorten the processing time of the workpiece;
  • The increase of cutting depth can reduce the number of rough machining and the effective cutting length of workpiece, thus shortening the processing time;
  • Properly increasing the feed can also effectively reduce the cutting length and shorten the processing time.

Experienced engineers are always able to increase the number of workpieces as much as possible while ensuring the life of props. So as to effectively improve the service life of CNC tools. At the same time, Our engineers are also working hard to provide customers with high-efficiency CNC machining solutions. On the one hand, providing high-quality CNC inserts has always been our tenet; on the other hand, Our can provide customized insert service for customers, and provide insert optimization scheme for customers according to customer’s test report.
